Uber to Acquire Delivery Hero in Landmark $14.8 Billion Deal
U.S. tech giant Uber has agreed to acquire the German takeaway company Delivery Hero in a major transaction valued at $14.8 billion (£11 billion / €12.9 billion). The acquisition is set to combine two of the world's largest delivery networks to form a global food delivery powerhouse. Under the terms of the agreement, Uber has offered €41.50 per share to Delivery Hero’s shareholders. After accounting for Uber’s existing 25% stake in the company—which was largely expanded in May—the net payout by Uber will be $13.7 billion. Global Reach and Regulatory Splitting The combined entity will merge Uber Eats with Delivery Hero’s established regional brands across 99 countries. This includes prominent platforms such as: foodpanda in Asia PedidosYa in Latin America talabat in the Middle East In 2025, the joint platforms processed an impressive $236 billion in orders. ┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ THE DEAL DIVISION │ ├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤ │ │ │ [ UBER EATS + DELIVERY HERO BRANDS ] │ │ Acquired by Uber for $13.7bn (net) across 99 nations. │ │ │ │ [ EXCLUDED OPERATIONS (14 Countries) ] │ │ Glovo (Spain/Portugal), foodora (Nordics), and │ │ Yemeksepeti (Turkey) sold to SSW Partners │ │ for $1.6bn to clear antitrust hurdles. │ │ │ └────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ To satisfy competition regulators and prevent market monopolization, Uber will not absorb Delivery Hero's operations in 14 countries where it already maintains a dominant presence. Instead, New York-based private equity firm SSW Partners will purchase these specific assets—including Glovo (Spain and Portugal), foodora (Norway and Sweden), and Yemeksepeti (Turkey)—for $1.6 billion. Consolidation in a Mature Market The acquisition reflects a broader consolidation wave in the food delivery sector. Following a massive surge in demand during pandemic-era lockdowns, companies have increasingly faced high operating expenses, placing downward pressure on courier wages. To survive, businesses are prioritizing immense scale. Recent sector consolidation includes: DoorDash acquiring Britain's Deliveroo for £2.9 billion. Prosus purchasing Just Eat Takeaway for €4 billion (£3.4 billion). Delivery Hero’s board and leadership have unanimously endorsed the takeover. Prosus, which holds a 17% stake in Delivery Hero, has already committed to selling its shares to Uber. "The food delivery business is highly competitive and scale-dependent. Joining forces with a strong partner now is the right move for Delivery Hero to best secure its future competitiveness..." — Kristin Skogen Lund, Chair of Delivery Hero’s Supervisory Board The Strategic Value for Uber Expected to close in the second half of 2027, the merger will significantly boost Uber's dual-service ecosystem: More Dual-Service Markets: Uber will offer both ride-hailing and food delivery in 58 markets, up from 34. Increased Customer Spend: According to Uber, customers who utilize both transportation and food delivery spend three times more on the application than those using just one service. Local Commitments: Uber has pledged to maintain Delivery Hero’s headquarters in Berlin, guarantee no workforce reductions until at least 2029, and invest €2 billion in Germany over the next five years. "By bringing our platforms together, we will extend affordable, reliable delivery to many millions more people... while nearly doubling the number of markets where we offer both mobility and delivery services." — Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber CEO The transaction marks the end of an era for Delivery Hero founder Niklas Östberg, who launched his first delivery startup in 2008 before founding Delivery Hero in Germany in 2011. Under pressure from activist investors, Östberg agreed to step down in May, expressing his gratitude to the team for building the company over the last 15 years.
